Introduction to Substance Misuse Services
Adult Substance Misuse Treatment Services are available for people across Lincolnshire aged 19 years and above. They are provided by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the substance misuse charity Addaction. Treatment is available for people who may have an alcohol or drug problem, and who are motivated to make changes around their alcohol or drug misuse.
What is substance misuse?
The term substance misuse refers to alcohol consumption or drug taking which leads a person to experience social, psychological, physical or legal problems.
These problems are related to intoxication or regular excessive consumption and/or dependence.
In other words, substance misuse is alcohol or drug taking which causes harm to the individual, their friends and family, or the wider community.
How can we support you?
The kind of help we can offer will depend upon your own needs, taking into account your faith, cultural and social background.
If you do require help for your alcohol or drug problem, the only way to be referred is via Addaction’s open access service ar the resource centres.
If you need to make use of the treatment service we will need to know more about you. This means collecting information, discussing it with you, and jointly agreeing what might need to be done and what services we can offer. This is called comprehensive assessment.
Following a comprehensive assessment, a care plan between yourself and the treatment service will be agreed. Sometimes we may need to ask for information about you from other people who know you such as your GP.
The Substance Misuse Treatment Service endeavours to work within the National Treatment Agency (NTA) waiting time targets, from referral to the start of any treatment. However, there may be times when the waiting period is longer than we would like.
How to get help
If you think that you do need help, please contact your GP who may refer you to open access.
You can also refer yourself to the service by telephoning one of the numbers listed on page six of this leaflet. However, in most cases we will want to discuss your circumstances with your GP. Referrals are also welcome from other agencies.
When you have been referred to our services
Once we have received your referral we will contact you by letter with an appointment date and time, which you can change if it is unsuitable for you. If you would prefer not to receive a letter, please let us know and tell us how you would like to be contacted.
Please make every effort to keep your appointment, but if you cannot, please let us know as soon as possible so that another time and date can be arranged. It is also important that you keep us informed of any change of address.
Sometimes you may have to wait to be seen. It is normally two weeks between us receiving your referral and the start of your treatment.
During your first appointment you will be offered a comprehensive assessment of your substance misuse problem to enable us to work out a treatment plan for you.
Please note that we do not keep prescribed drugs on our premises. These are always issued from a chemist or pharmacy.
Working with you
Substance misuse services are made up of a range of people who have received specialist training to work with people who have alcohol or drug related problems.
It is very important they work in partnership with you, and if you agree, your carer or family members.
The Treatment Service works closely with others including your GP, Lincolnshire Social Services, and voluntary organisations. All treatments will be discussed with you in full by your treatment worker and you will be given the opportunity to talk about your problems.
You will be involved in all decisions that affect you. Staff will be looking at what is best to meet your needs in both the short and long term.
As your treatment programme will be structured to suit your needs, it may involve one or more agencies. You will be consulted if you do need to be referred to another agency. It is possible you may be advised to take time off if you are working, but this will usually be during a detoxification treatment and we will discuss this with you.
We will help you to look at aspects of your life; how you might make changes and how to deal with problems you may experience in the future without resorting to the use of drugs. If you have a carer, support can also be offered to them if they are assessed as needing this. We expect to see you by pre- arranged and agreed appointments.
For some people, specialist in-patient detoxification and/or rehabilitation can be arranged as appropriate.
Some of the services we provide
Treatment in the community
Wherever possible, the Substance Misuse Treatment Team will aim to provide help to you within the local community.
Referral to other services
There may be times when referral to another service, for example support groups, may be required in providing treatment for you. Any referral will only happen following consultation with you and with your agreement.
In-patient treatment
There may be occasions when admission to specialist alcohol or drug units may be required. This may be the most appropriate service at the time, due to a high level of need, which may include your safety.
Central Prescribing Clinics
There may be times when it is more appropriate for the prescribing of treatment to be carried out by a specialist doctor and not by your own GP. This will be fully discussed with you first.
Rehabilitation
Some people may benefit from moving into a specialist residential facility for a period of time, and with your approval, you may be referred there for further help with your alcohol or drug problem.
Confidentiality
Any matter you discuss with staff will remain confidential. However, there are some exceptions to this policy and the person you see will explain this to you.
